Skeletons is an epitaph for a musical life that appeared to be over, an old man's reflection on the legacy of his own tools, in the tradition of Van Morrison's Astral Weeks or Nikos Kazantzakis's Report to Greco. Created during a year that Tony believed would be his last as a songwriter, these spare, careful arrangements by Zachary Gresham and John Westberry carry Skeletons' sacred songs with the the ghostly evanescence of a chamber-ensemble. "Horses" may be Tony Raney's finest song, and Skeletons may be his most focused, cohesive, and quietly beautiful collection.

"Skeletons is the story of what was left. It was all black and white at this point. I was very much outside of the music world, but deeply inside of my own head and heart. Introspective to the core. I wanted to find out what was really at the root of where I had found myself. In doing so I found an ember, the final flicker of the flame. Disconnected from the recording process but closer to the feelings at the center of the songs than I had ever been, I thought Skeletons was a curtain call. A small collection of songs to be my final works. It was getting dark." -TR
